Data Analysis Questions for Distillation

  1. Distillation Graph
    1. What type information can you get from the distillation graph?
    2. What information can the distillation graph not provide and why?
    3. Did your distillation graph give you the type of data from question one?

                                                              i.      If yes, what is that data? (think boiling point)

                                                            ii.      If no, why not?

iii.      Were there any problems with your graph?

1.      What are they?

2.      Why do you have them?

  1. GC Chromatograms
    1. What is the main data you can obtain from the GC chromatograms?
    2. How many peaks are there for each fraction chromatogram?

                                                              i.      What does the number of peaks tell you?

ii.      Is the number of peaks acceptable? (is it too many)

    1. What are the retention times for each peak in the chromatogram?

                                                              i.      What do the retention times tell you?

ii.      Do they match with your distillation graph data (does the boiling point match the retention time of acetone or toluene)?

                                                          iii.      Are there any problems?

    1. What are the peak areas for each peak in the chromatogram?

                                                              i.      What do the peak areas tell you?

                                                            ii.      Are there any problems?

  1. Identity
    1. Did you identify the peaks of acetone and toluene correctly?
    2. Why or why not?
  2. Ratio
    1. Did you calculate the correct answer?
    2. Why or why not?
