Liquid/Solid Extractions

1. Place the solid and the extractions solvent into the container indicated in the procedure.

2. Heat the solution to the temperature and time stated in the procedure

3. Make certain the container is not a closed system to avoid pressure.

Liquid/Liquid Extractions

1. Make certain that your separatory funnel is not leaking by placing a small amount of the extraction solvent into the separatory funnel. If it does not leak, proceed to the next step. If it is leaking, check to see if the stopcock is loose. Tighten it and see if that solves the problem. If it does not, ask your TA for help.

2. Add the rest of the extraction solvent and your original solvent that contains the dissolved mixture.

3. Add the stopper and begin shaking the separatory funnel being sure to vent often, especially if CO₂ is being generated.

4. When finished, place the separatory funnel onto the support ring clamp, remove the stopper and begin draining the bottom layer.
